Meditation has the power to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and help you return to the present moment. In this post, I share why it’s become such an important part of my life and how you can begin your own practice.
Choosing to start a meditation practice has truly changed my life for the better. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, I gently remind myself that meditating will help me come back to centre. But I’ll be honest — sometimes I don’t feel like doing the things that I know are good for me. There are days when I get stuck in my own head, convincing myself that something must be wrong with me, that I should be feeling better by now, or that trying won’t make a difference. It’s so easy to spiral into that mindset where it feels like life just isn’t working in your favour anymore.
But every single time I choose to meditate, something shifts.
Those heavy thoughts begin to soften. I return to my breath. I return to myself. And almost suddenly, I feel grounded again — back in the present moment and filled with a quiet sense of hope.
Meditation gently brings me into the now.
When I’m in the present moment, I feel like I’m back in control. I’m no longer replaying the past or letting it weigh me down. I’m not worrying about the future or letting anxiety take over. I’m simply here. And for me, the “now” feels like the most magical place to be. It’s where clarity lives. It’s where I can reconnect with my intuition, make aligned decisions, and take small steps toward the life I truly want to create.
I know starting a meditation practice isn’t always easy. Some days, it feels hard just to sit still and slow down. It can feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, and you might wonder if you’re doing it right. I’ve been there. But with consistency and patience, it becomes more natural. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about showing up for yourself, one breath at a time, and allowing yourself to find moments of peace within.
For those new to meditation, my ebook How to Meditate for Beginners is a wonderful guide. It walks you step-by-step through building a mindful practice, creating a comfortable space, and using meditation to calm your mind and connect with yourself — perfect for busy days or when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Creating a supportive environment is also key — a comfortable meditation cushion can help you sit with ease and focus longer without discomfort.
Returning to My Meditation Practice
When I haven’t meditated for a few days and try to get back into it, I usually feel a bit off at first. Sitting still can feel surprisingly hard — so instead of forcing it, I listen to my body. If I need to stretch, I stretch. This helps me relax physically and settle my mind before I even begin. Once I do sit down, the thoughts often start rushing in. Instead of fighting them, I acknowledge them and gently release them with my breath. I try not to hold onto any one thought for too long. I let them come and go naturally.
After that, I begin counting my breath — inhaling for four, exhaling for four. I continue until my breathing finds its rhythm. Eventually, I let go of the counting and simply allow myself to be in the moment. That’s when everything starts to feel different. That’s when the shift happens.
When we quiet the mind and just allow ourselves to be, something beautiful unfolds.
For me, that moment feels like a deep connection — a sense of being aligned, supported, and at peace. It can feel like a warm light within me, as though I’m reconnecting with something greater and also something very personal at the same time. I often feel a sense of healing, clarity, and expansion. Sometimes I receive insights or gentle realizations about my life. My mind feels clear, and I’m able to listen to my inner guidance more easily. The more consistently I meditate, the easier it becomes to reach this calm, grounded state.
That said, not every meditation feels this way — and that’s completely okay.
There are days when my thoughts feel louder and I feel more anxious. Sometimes I know I need to sit with certain feelings, even if they’re uncomfortable. Other times, I’m simply overwhelmed with everything on my to-do list, and it’s hard to slow down. On those days, I might only sit for five minutes or even less. And I’m learning not to judge myself for that.
Meditation isn’t about having a perfect experience every time. It’s about returning to your breath. It’s about creating small moments of calm within your day. Even if all you do is show up, take a few deep breaths, and try again tomorrow — that still counts. What matters most is that you made time for yourself.
For many people, establishing a ritual cue helps deepen the practice — a set of mala beads can be a grounding focus for breath and intention during your sessions.

Creating a Space That Feels Right for You
You can meditate just about anywhere that feels comfortable and safe. Lately, I’ve been meditating on my bed because it’s the coziest spot in my home right now, and it helps me feel relaxed and secure. Sometimes, after a good yoga session, I’ll stay on my mat and meditate there. I haven’t decided whether I prefer yoga before or after meditation — both feel beneficial in different ways. Yoga helps release tension in my body so my mind can settle more easily, and meditation helps quiet my thoughts so I can move with more awareness during yoga. I’ve also meditated outdoors, and connecting with nature in that way felt incredibly grounding and uplifting. It made me feel deeply connected to the world around me.
The beautiful thing about meditation is that you truly can do it anywhere — on the couch, on the floor, in a quiet corner, or even in a small space where you can be alone with your thoughts. What matters most is finding a place that feels right for you. If you’d like to make it feel more intentional, you can light a candle, burn some incense, or hold a crystal. I sometimes meditate with my clear quartz crystal to help release any energetic blocks and invite in clarity and positive energy. Once you’ve created a space that feels supportive, simply get comfortable and begin.
At times, I like to use a guided meditation to help me settle in, especially when I’m trying to rebuild a consistent practice. It helps me focus and reminds me why I enjoy meditation so much. I also love listening to meditation music during my practice or even throughout the day. Recently, I listened to Focus The Mind & Calm Your Heart | 528 Hz and it felt incredibly calming and supportive.

Final Thoughts
I truly believe that our bodies have an incredible ability to heal themselves. I also believe that our emotions are deeply connected to our physical well-being, and that our thoughts can influence how we feel — mentally, emotionally, and even physically. I understand that this perspective may feel controversial to some, and I don’t claim to have all the scientific answers. It’s simply something I feel intuitively and have experienced in my own life.
To me, living holistically means honouring the connection between mind, body, and soul. We are not separate parts — we are an integrated whole. When one area is neglected, it affects the others. That’s why I believe it’s so important to care for ourselves in every way we can — through rest, movement, nourishing food, meaningful connections, and practices that support our inner world, like meditation.
Starting a daily meditation practice can be a powerful step toward greater mindfulness and self-awareness. It gives you a tool you can return to whenever life feels overwhelming. Meditation doesn’t remove stress from our lives, but it does help us respond to it differently. It helps us pause, breathe, and choose peace instead of reacting from fear or anxiety. That ability to return to calm — even in small moments — is incredibly empowering.
We all experience challenges, uncertainty, and difficult emotions. What matters most is not avoiding them, but learning how to come back to ourselves with compassion. Meditation has been that anchor for me. It reminds me that peace is always available within — I just have to take a moment to access it.
