Choosing Self-Love This Valentine’s Day: A Guide to Single Life, Healing & Intentional Living

This Valentine’s Day, I’m choosing self-love over pressure, expectations, and relationship timelines. In this post, I share my journey of embracing single life, healing after past relationships, and the self-care rituals that help me feel grounded, empowered, and whole.

Being single for awhile now, Valentine’s Day has felt like just another day for me. But the energy around this time of year is so deeply rooted in love that I started asking myself: why can’t that love be directed inward? Why can’t Valentine’s Day also be about self-love?

The past year has been a whirlwind when it comes to relationships. I met someone I genuinely cared for, and it didn’t work out. I was then forced into an arranged marriage that also ended. After everything, I made a conscious decision that, for now, I am better off alone. Not in a lonely way—but in a deeply intentional, self-honouring way.

I’m currently on a journey of self-discovery. I’m changing every day as I learn who I am meant to be. When there is this much inner work happening, it’s hard to find a partner who truly aligns with where I am in life. I believe that once I reach the level of self-understanding and fulfillment I’m striving for, the right person will naturally find their way into my life. Until then, I’m not looking—and I’m genuinely happy about it.

For a long time, I jumped from relationship to relationship, and instead of feeling fulfilled, I felt drained . So now, I’m pouring that energy back into myself. I’m learning who I am, what truly makes me happy, and what fulfillment looks like for me in this lifetime. I don’t feel regret about not having a partner right now. I believe we live many different versions of life across different timelines. Maybe there’s a version of Janice who is happily married, another who is a single mom, and another—this one—who is learning to stand fully on her own. When I think about it this way, I don’t feel loss. I feel acceptance.

Recently, my mom told me that I need to “start my life.” To her, that means a stable career, marriage, and children. But my life has already begun. I’m 35 years old, and I’m content with being alone right now. I’m creating a life that makes me happy without outside voices telling me what I should be doing. While I do believe that having a partner or children could bring joy into my life, I don’t see them as requirements. I’m okay with simply being with myself.

So this Valentine’s Day, instead of focusing on what I don’t have, I’m choosing to celebrate what I do have—me.

Celebrate Yourself: Self-Love Rituals for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is often centred around romantic love, but the most powerful love you can cultivate is the love you give yourself. This year, I’m shifting the focus inward and honouring my mind, body, and soul with intentional self-love rituals.

1. Morning Intention Ritual

I love beginning my day with small, intentional rituals—lighting a candle, journaling, or simply sitting in quiet reflection. Taking a few deep breaths and repeating, “I am worthy of love, abundance, and joy,” helps set a positive tone that carries me through the day.

2. Indulgent Bath or Shower CeremonyBath Bombs Gift Set

Water has always felt sacred to me. Transforming an ordinary shower or bath into a mindful ritual can be deeply healing. A bath bomb or shower steamer add a touch of indulgence—no spa day required. Pairing music, candles, and calming scents helps wash away stress and self-doubt, leaving space for clarity and renewal.

3. Heart-Opening Movement

Movement is another way I honor myself. Whether through yoga, gentle stretching, or dancing freely, it helps release stagnant energy and reconnect me with my heart. With a yoga mat, even a few minutes each morning feels effortless, and occasionally I follow an online class to keep the practice playful and inspiring.

4. Create a Self-Love Altar

I love carving out a small corner of my space for self-love—candles, crystals, and handwritten notes gently remind me that I am worthy of care, while a diffuser with soothing essential oils fills the air with calm.

5. Nourishing Rituals for Body & Soul

Fueling my body with foods that make me feel good is a form of self-respect. I enjoy sipping on a herbal tea during quiet mornings or treating myself to nourishing snacks that bring comfort without guilt.

6. Journaling for Reflection & Gratitude

Writing down my thoughts and reflections is a daily practice. A gratitude journal helps me track growth, celebrate wins, and release what no longer serves me.

7. Evening Wind-Down Ritual

Ending my day with meditation, breathwork, or gentle stretches helps me rest fully. Lying under a cozy blanket makes my body feel safe and grounded, while soft lighting and a few calming scents complete the ritual.

Everyday Ways I Practice Self-Love

Self-love isn’t just rituals—it’s how I show up for myself daily:

  • Creating routines that support my physical and mental health
  • Exercising in ways that feel good, not punishing
  • Eating nourishing foods without guilt
  • Protecting my peace and mental well-being
  • Speaking kindly to myself and practising positive affirmations
  • Buying myself things that genuinely bring joy
  • Indulge in small joys without guilt
  • Saying no when something doesn’t align

Self-love is showing yourself—consistently—that you are worth the effort.

Final Thoughts

Choosing yourself is not selfish—it’s an act of courage. In a world that constantly tells us we need to be partnered, settled, or following a specific timeline to be “whole,” choosing self-love is a quiet rebellion. It’s deciding that your worth is not measured by your relationship status, your age, or how closely your life resembles someone else’s expectations.

Being alone does not mean being behind. It doesn’t mean something is missing or that you’ve failed in any way. Sometimes, being alone is exactly what your soul needs to heal, grow, and realign. It’s in these moments of solitude that you learn to listen to yourself, trust your intuition, and build a relationship with yourself that no one can take away.

This season of my life is about expansion—not through another person, but through deeper self-awareness, peace, and authenticity. I’m learning that love doesn’t have to be rushed, forced, or chased. When it’s meant to arrive, it will meet me where I am, not where I feel pressured to be.

This Valentine’s Day, I’m choosing patience. I’m choosing compassion for myself. I’m choosing to honour my journey exactly as it is. Whether this chapter lasts a moment or a lifetime, I trust that it’s shaping me into someone more grounded, more fulfilled, and more aligned with my purpose.

If you’re reading this and finding yourself in a similar space—single, uncertain, or redefining what happiness looks like for you—know that you are not alone. Your life is unfolding in its own perfect timing. You are allowed to create a life that feels good to you, even if it looks different from what you once imagined.

Love yourself gently. Celebrate yourself boldly. And remember—you are already whole.
