Tarot Major Arcana Explained: Meanings & Life Lessons

Explore the Major Arcana tarot cards, their meanings, and the life lessons they reveal. Learn how tarot can support self-reflection, intuition, and personal growth.

Have you ever had something happen so many times that it became impossible to ignore?

For me, that has been tarot.

There was a period in my life when I felt completely lost. I questioned my career, my purpose, my relationships and whether I was making the right decisions. I wasn’t looking for someone to tell me exactly what my future would be—I was looking for reassurance that I wasn’t completely off track.

That’s when tarot cards quietly became part of my everyday life.

At first, I found myself watching tarot readings on TikTok. Whenever I felt anxious or uncertain, I would search for another reading. What fascinated me wasn’t that someone claimed to know my future—it was the synchronicities.

I’d watch five different creators, all using different decks, and somehow the message would be almost identical.

One day I’d wonder if becoming a content creator was the right path for me, and every reading seemed to encourage me to keep going. Another day I’d question my love life, and again the message would repeat itself: you’re okay on your own, you’re worthy of love, and choosing peace right now is exactly where you’re meant to be.

Those moments didn’t make me believe that tarot was controlling my life. Instead, they made me pay closer attention to my own intuition.

I’ve always believed that what enters our awareness arrives for a reason. Whether that’s a conversation, a book, a meaningful coincidence or a tarot card, I think life has a unique way of inviting us to reflect.

As I began learning more about tarot, I started keeping a journal to record the cards I pulled, my interpretations, and the patterns I noticed over time. A tarot journal can be a beautiful way to deepen your self-reflection practice.

Today, tarot has become less about searching for answers and more about understanding myself. I’m even teaching myself how to read tarot because I’m fascinated by the symbolism behind each card and the different ways it can be interpreted.

One of my favourite parts of tarot is the Major Arcana.

These 22 cards represent some of the biggest lessons we experience throughout life.

What Is the Major Arcana in Tarot?

The Major Arcana is the part of a tarot deck made up of 22 cards, beginning with The Fool and ending with The World.

While the Minor Arcana often focuses on everyday experiences, the Major Arcana represents life’s bigger picture. These cards reflect:

  • Major life transitions
  • Emotional growth
  • Spiritual development
  • Personal transformation
  • Important lessons and milestones

Many tarot readers describe the Major Arcana as the “hero’s journey”—a symbolic path every person walks throughout their lifetime.

Each card represents an archetype, meaning a universal human experience that appears across cultures, stories and generations.

Rather than predicting specific events, these cards often encourage us to pause, reflect and ask deeper questions about where we are and where we’re headed.

If you are new to tarot, having a beginner-friendly guidebook can help you understand the symbolism behind each card while developing your own intuitive connection.

How the Major Arcana Connects to Everyday Life

One reason I love the Major Arcana is because it reminds me that life moves in cycles.

There are seasons where we feel like The Fool—excited but uncertain.

There are seasons where we’re The Hermit—pulling away from the world to reconnect with ourselves.

Sometimes life feels like The Tower, where everything changes overnight.

And eventually, we reach The Star, where healing quietly begins.

If you’re beginning your tarot journey, a beginner-friendly deck can help you connect with the Major Arcana. The classic Rider-Waite tarot deck is a popular choice because its symbolism makes learning each card’s meaning easier.

I don’t think these cards tell us exactly what’s going to happen.

Instead, I believe they help us recognize what we’re already experiencing emotionally.

That’s what makes tarot so meaningful to me.

When I repeatedly received similar messages during difficult moments, I wasn’t simply hearing someone else’s interpretation. I was noticing themes that already existed within my own life.

Tarot became less about predicting my future and more about understanding my present.

A Grounded Perspective on Tarot

Whether you see tarot as spiritual guidance, psychology, symbolism or simply an interesting self-reflection exercise, its greatest strength lies in the conversations it creates within yourself.

The Major Arcana can be used as:

  • A journalling prompt
  • A mindfulness practice
  • A self-reflection tool
  • A way to explore emotions
  • A framework for personal growth

The cards don’t replace your intuition.

If anything, they encourage you to listen to it more closely.

That’s why I believe tarot works best when it’s approached with curiosity rather than certainty. Instead of asking, “What will happen?” I prefer asking, “What can I learn from this?”

That simple shift changes everything.

Reflection Questions

  • Which Major Arcana card feels most like your current season of life?
  • What recurring lesson keeps showing up for you?
  • Where could you trust yourself a little more?
  • Which part of your life is asking for transformation instead of resistance?
  • What would change if you believed you already had the answers within you?

Choose Between A or B

A) I trust my intuition and follow the signs appearing in my life.

B) I am learning to quiet the noise and listen within.

Emotional Check-In

  • What emotion have I been avoiding lately?
  • What is my intuition quietly trying to tell me?
  • What lesson do I think life is inviting me to learn this week?
  • Where can I offer myself a little more compassion today?

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I’m grateful for those nights spent watching tarot readings when I needed encouragement.

Did every reading predict my future perfectly?

Probably not.

But they helped me slow down, reflect and reconnect with myself during a season when I needed it most.

Today, tarot isn’t something I rely on for every answer. Instead, it’s become one of many tools that supports my personal growth alongside journalling, meditation and mindfulness.

For me, the Major Arcana serves as a reminder that life isn’t about avoiding change—it’s about learning from every chapter we move through.

Whether you’re just beginning your tarot journey or you’ve been reading cards for years, I hope these meanings encourage you to trust your own wisdom just a little more.

After all, sometimes the greatest message isn’t hidden inside the card.

Sometimes it’s hidden inside the way the card makes you reflect.
