Who do I want to be this year? That question keeps surfacing as I reflect on my goals and my place in the world. I want to feel more connected—to my community, my country, and the energy that surrounds us. Living in Canada, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunities, landscapes, and people around me. But gratitude alone isn’t enough. I want to act.

I’ve joined WWOOF Canada, and this May, I’ll start my first experience as a WWOOFer on a local farm. I’m beyond excited—but I know this is only the beginning. I want to volunteer more, support initiatives that align with my values, and be actively involved in our food systems. My journey with food has taught me that what we eat and how we connect with it isn’t just personal—it’s deeply political, ethical, and spiritual.

After working at farmers’ markets in Vancouver, I fell in love with seeing farmers’ joy in growing and sharing food. I loved being part of the process that brings real, nourishing food from the land to the community. But when I moved into restaurants, I realised how disconnected much of the food system really is. Ingredients weren’t organic or chemical-free—they were mass-produced, prioritized for profit over nourishment. Cooking meals I couldn’t fully trust dimmed my spirit. I wanted food to be an act of love and healing, not compromise or profit-driven convenience.

It became clear that if I wanted to see real change, I had to step into an activist role in my own life. I began thinking critically about the systems we support with our money and time. Restaurants may market luxury or indulgence, but if the food is not grown responsibly, if chemicals and pesticides are prioritized over care, we’re contributing to a broken system. I realised that conscious consumption is a form of activism—our dollars and decisions are votes for the kind of world we want to live in.

This disillusionment, combined with a desire to be part of the solution, led me to WWOOF Canada, where I can work alongside farmers who are actively cultivating change. Here, I can support initiatives that prioritize organic, chemical-free, and sustainable food practices. I can meet the people growing our food, learn from their wisdom, and play a role in a system that values health, community, and the planet. Food is medicine, and by engaging directly with the process, I’m taking a stand for the kind of future I want to live in—a future where nourishment, ethics, and sustainability guide our choices.

Supporting local farmers and making mindful food choices is a practical way to live consciously and align your actions with your values.
