Becoming Her: The Habits I’m Leaving Behind

Becoming Her: The Habits I’m Leaving Behind

Becoming her means releasing old patterns, trusting yourself, and protecting your peace.

What if becoming the woman you want to be means letting go of the very things you keep going back to?

I woke up in an undeniable bad mood today, and it got me thinking. Am I still repeating the same patterns that once kept me stuck, even after working so hard to create a different life?

Three years ago, I ended a relationship because I didn’t have the freedom to focus on my goals. Creating content was a struggle. If I wanted to film a cooking video, my ex would come into the kitchen, ruin my shot, and then get mad at me for being in his way. Looking back, the behaviour felt incredibly manipulative. Even working on organizing projects around his home could become an issue. It felt like my life was expected to revolve around him, leaving little room for my own ambitions or the things I wanted to accomplish.

And I was miserable.

Fast-forward to today, and I’m living peacefully on my parents’ farm. I have the space to create, work on my goals, explore my interests, and enjoy my own company. I’ve built a life where I feel fulfilled.

Now, my ex is trying to come back into my life. Suddenly, he’s being overly supportive of my content creation, and I’m questioning whether it’s genuine. I’m supposed to visit him in a couple of days, but honestly, there’s a 50% chance I won’t go.

Part of me wants to enjoy the fun experiences and companionship. The other part wonders why I would risk the peace I’ve worked so hard to create.

And that’s where I am today: recognizing a familiar pattern and deciding whether I’m finally ready to break it.

Because becoming her isn’t just about glowing up, building better habits, or creating your dream life. It’s also about recognizing what threatens that growth and having the self-respect to choose differently.

What’s in This Guide?

We’re exploring eight habits I’m leaving behind as I become more intentional about my life:

  • Overthinking everything
  • People-pleasing
  • Comparing myself to others
  • Waiting for permission
  • Ignoring my intuition
  • Being afraid to start
  • Settling for less
  • Speaking negatively about myself

Let’s get into it.

8 Habits I’m Leaving Behind to Become Her

1. Overthinking Everything

Girl, sometimes we can think ourselves in circles.

There’s a difference between carefully considering a decision and repeatedly analyzing every possible outcome because we’re afraid of making the wrong choice.

When something familiar comes back into your life, it’s easy to get caught up in what could happen. You imagine the best-case scenario, replay old memories, and wonder whether things might be different this time.

But hope isn’t evidence of change.

Instead of overthinking, ask yourself:

  • What do I actually know?
  • What has genuinely changed?
  • Am I making this decision from clarity or fear?

What I’m choosing instead: Clarity, discernment, and trusting myself to make decisions without needing every answer upfront.

When your mind feels cluttered, grab your journal and let it all out. Journaling helps you release the mental noise, reconnect with your intuition, and get aligned with the woman you’re becoming. Sometimes, your next level of growth starts with getting quiet and listening to yourself.

2. People-Pleasing

Being kind is beautiful. Abandoning yourself to keep everyone else happy? Not so much.

People-pleasing can look like saying yes when you mean no, ignoring your discomfort to avoid conflict, or putting someone else’s needs ahead of your own every single time.

You can care about people without making their happiness your responsibility.

And you can disappoint someone without being a bad person.

I’m learning that my time, energy, and ambitions matter too. I don’t need to justify every boundary or explain why something isn’t right for me.

What I’m choosing instead: Healthy boundaries, honest communication, and relationships where I don’t have to make myself smaller to keep the peace.

If people-pleasing is a pattern you’re trying to break, The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins is a book worth exploring as you learn to focus less on other people’s reactions and more on the choices you can control.

3. Comparing Myself to Others

Comparison has a way of making you forget how far you’ve come.

You look at someone else’s career, body, relationship, or lifestyle and suddenly feel like you’re falling behind. But their journey has nothing to do with yours.

Your growth doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

When comparison creeps in, bring the focus back to your own life:

  • What am I building?
  • What have I learned recently?
  • What makes me feel fulfilled?
  • What do I genuinely want, separate from other people’s expectations?

What I’m choosing instead: Inspiration without comparison and celebrating my own progress.

4. Waiting for Permission

You don’t need permission to pursue your dreams.

Not from your partner. Not from your friends. Not from strangers on the internet.

If you want to start a blog, build a business, improve your fitness, or explore a creative passion, you’re allowed to begin.

You don’t need to be completely confident, either. Confidence often develops through taking action.

And the people around you won’t always understand your vision. That’s okay. Your life doesn’t have to make sense to everyone else.

What I’m choosing instead: Giving myself permission to grow, create, and build a life that reflects my own values.

5. Ignoring My Intuition

This one hits differently.

Sometimes we sense that something isn’t right, but we talk ourselves out of it because we want a different outcome.

We make excuses. We focus on someone’s potential instead of their behaviour. We convince ourselves that maybe we’re overthinking.

I’ve been reflecting on this with my own situation. My ex seems more supportive now, but I can’t erase the experiences that made me leave in the first place.

Could things be different? Possibly.

But I don’t have to assume they are. I can take my time, observe his actions, and decide what feels right for me without rushing into anything.

What I’m choosing instead: Listening to my intuition while using discernment, evidence, and reflection to guide my decisions.

Your intuition doesn’t have to make every decision for you. It can simply be a signal to pause and pay attention.

6. Being Afraid to Start

How many times have we delayed something because we didn’t feel ready?

We wait for more confidence, more knowledge, or the perfect moment. Meanwhile, the thing we want to do stays on our to-do list.

The truth is, you learn by doing.

Your first workout doesn’t have to be your strongest. Your first blog post doesn’t have to be your best. And your first attempt at breaking an old pattern might feel uncomfortable.

That’s part of the process.

What I’m choosing instead: Imperfect action, consistency, and allowing myself to learn as I go.

You don’t have to transform your entire life today. Just make one choice that moves you forward.

7. Settling for Less

There’s a difference between gratitude and settling.

You can appreciate what you have while still recognizing that something isn’t right for you. You can enjoy someone’s company without deciding they’re the right person to build a future with.

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

I want to enjoy my life. I love the idea of travelling, experiencing new things, and having someone to share those moments with. But I also know how it feels to be in a relationship where my own goals and interests seem to take a back seat.

Is temporary excitement worth risking the peace I’ve created?

That’s a question worth sitting with.

Raising your standards doesn’t mean expecting perfection. It means being honest about what you need and what you’re no longer willing to accept.

What I’m choosing instead: Self-respect, higher standards, and relationships that support my growth rather than compete with it.

8. Speaking Negatively About Myself

Personal growth can get uncomfortable when you realize you’re still struggling with something you thought you’d already overcome.

But please don’t turn that awareness into another reason to criticize yourself.

Recognising a pattern doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you have an opportunity to respond differently.

Instead of asking, “Why am I still doing this?” try asking:

  • What is this situation teaching me?
  • What am I afraid of losing?
  • What would a healthier response look like?

You can hold yourself accountable without tearing yourself down.

What I’m choosing instead: Self-compassion, accountability, and speaking to myself with the same kindness I would offer a friend.

If you’re working on changing the way you speak to yourself, keeping a set of affirmation cards nearby can be a simple reminder to challenge negative thoughts and choose words that support the woman you’re becoming.

What I’m Choosing Instead: Protecting My Peace

I’m learning that becoming her isn’t only about what I add to my life. It’s also about what I stop entertaining.

I’m choosing to:

  • Trust myself instead of constantly seeking reassurance.
  • Protect my energy without feeling guilty.
  • Prioritize my goals and personal growth.
  • Pay attention to consistent actions, not just promises.
  • Create boundaries that support my well-being.
  • Enjoy my life without sacrificing my peace to do so.

And I’m reminding myself that growth isn’t about controlling every outcome. It’s about recognizing what I can control: my choices, boundaries, habits, and responses.

Your Becoming Her Check-In

Take a moment to be honest with yourself.

  1. What relationship, habit, or mindset am I ready to leave behind?
  2. What am I hoping will change, and what evidence supports that hope?
  3. What choice can I make today that aligns with the woman I’m becoming?

You don’t need to figure everything out at once. Start with what you know.

Choose Your Energy

A: I keep returning to familiar situations because I’m hoping they’ll eventually become what I need.

B: I can appreciate the good moments while choosing what supports my peace, growth, and self-respect.

For me, I’m working towards B.

It’s not always easy. Sometimes we want the experience, the companionship, or the possibility of a different outcome. But wanting those things doesn’t mean we have to accept a situation that no longer feels right.

Final Thoughts

This morning, I found myself questioning whether I’m still repeating the patterns that once kept me stuck.

I’ve created a life on my parents’ farm where I feel peaceful, fulfilled, and free to pursue my goals. Yet I’m considering revisiting a relationship that once made it difficult to do those very things.

Part of me wants the fun and companionship. Another part knows that my peace is valuable, and I don’t want to lose sight of that simply because I’m hoping things might be different.

I don’t have to rush into a decision. I can look at the past honestly, pay attention to the present, and decide what is right for me.

And maybe that’s what becoming her really looks like.

Not always having the answers. Not never making mistakes. But recognizing when an old pattern shows up and giving yourself permission to choose differently.

You are allowed to evolve. To change your mind. To raise your standards. To walk away from what no longer aligns with your well-being.

You can have a soft heart and strong boundaries. You can desire companionship and still choose yourself. You can be grateful for your life while protecting everything you’ve worked so hard to build.

Your next chapter doesn’t require you to keep reopening doors you’ve already walked away from.

Sometimes the most powerful glow-up is deciding that your peace is no longer negotiable.

Until next time… keep becoming the grounded, glowing you. ✨
